Members at GSU's 2009 annual general meetings voted on
important constitutional and bylaw changes which resulted in
reorganizing GSU into Locals based on member bargaining units (i.e.
Viterra, Heartland, Finora, PrintWest, etc.) rather than geographic
locations.
Other proposed constitutional amendments included changing the name of
the union to Grain and General Services Union (ILWU•Canada) effective
January 1, 2010.
“GSU’s Joint Executive Council members felt the proposed change in name
better reflects our diverse membership,” GSU general secretary Hugh
Wagner explained. “Adding the word ‘General’ acknowledges our members
who do not work in the agricultural industry and the potential for
growth outside our traditional areas.”
“At the same time, Council members felt it was
important to keep the word ‘Grain’ to reflect the contribution and
history as an organization founded by employees working for grain
companies,“ Wagner added.
