- A workplace
becomes unionized if
a majority of the workers join the union by signing a union card.
Union organizers will work with interested workers to contact all
employees
and talk to them about the benefits of joining the GSU.
- When a
majority of
employees sign
union cards, the GSU will make a formal request to the Saskatchewan
Labour
Relations Board to certify the Union as your representative. By
law,
the union is required to send the Board copies of each signed union
card,
but this information is never shown to your employer. The Board
will
order your employer to collect a sample signature from every employee
so
that the Board (not your employer) can verify the accuracy of all the
signatures
on the union cards. The Board can hold a hearing or can give the
certification without a hearing.
- The next step
is
for all employees
covered by the union to meet and decide what you want to bargain into
your
first collective agreement (or contract). You will elect
representatives
from among your co-workers to be on your bargaining committee, along
with
a union staff person. Your bargaining committee will meet with
management
to bargain your first collective agreement.
