There are many benefits to
belonging to a union.
- Unions have
the
legal right to bargain
with employers about all kinds of issues, not just wages and working
conditions.
- If your workplace was unionized, your
union and representatives you elect would bargain a collective
agreement with your employer based on the priorities that you and your
co-workers identify. You can see what a collective agreement looks like
here.
- Your
collective
agreement protects
your wages and working conditions. It also gives you a way to
challenge
actions and decisions that management makes, without having to worry
you’ll
lose your job as a result. Experienced union staff work with you
and represent you in bargaining and other meetings with your employer.
- Every person in
the bargaining unit it entitled to union services, to become a member
of GSU, and to participate in the membership activities of
the union.
- GSU’s staff help all members of the
union bargaining units who request assistance with employment related
issues including, but not limited to the following:
- advocating for employee rights in
the workplace,
- assisting employees when the
provisions of the collective agreement aren’t being applied fairly or
consistently,
- assisting employees who have been
harassed or discriminated against in the workplace and ensuring
employees have a safe and healthy work environment,
- assisting employees who are
injured on the job and have difficulty claiming Worker’s Compensation
or returning to work,
- assisting employees who are ill
and denied sick leave, short or long term disability benefits,
- bargaining and administering a
binding collective agreement that can’t be unilaterally or arbitrarily
changed,
- assisting employees to ensure
they are paid the appropriate rate of pay and receive pay increases as
called for by their position and the collective agreement,
- assisting employees who are
unjustly dismissed or disciplined.
The list above is only an outline of the assistance we provide.
If you are experiencing a problem in the workplace and you aren’t sure
where to turn, contact us and we will do our best to help you.
You will never receive a bill for the assistance GSU provides or the
advice we give you. Any services GSU provides to you are covered by
your union dues.
Union dues
GSU is funded by union dues. The level of union dues is determined by
the members of the union and any changes must be approved by a
two-thirds majority of members voting at membership meetings.
Dues are 1.75% of your gross regular pay. GSU’s dues are only
assessed on regular pay. Dues are not assessed on overtime or bonuses.
All union dues are 100 percent income tax deductible.
GSU’s Defense Fund is also funded by union dues. GSU members
established the Defense Fund to rely on for financial support in the
event of a bargaining dispute, action being required to defend
collective bargaining rights, and for organizing campaigns.
Currently employees in GSU bargaining units pay 1% of their gross
regular pay to a maximum of $10 each month into the GSU Defense
Fund. GSU members vote annually to decide whether to continue
paying into the Defense Fund and the decision to continue or
discontinue the additional dues must be approved by a majority of
members voting at annual membership meetings.
